It's Art!

We don't have anything earth shattering to report this week, but I figured I would squeeze in one more post while it is still technically summer anyway. (I'm hoping the warm weather hangs on a while longer, no matter what the calendar says.)

Mom's been having some wacky dreams lately, many of which involve her trying and failing to save stuffed animals from various sad fates. I guess I'm glad it's stuffed animals rather than us dolls, but still... it's a little unsettling. As Lily keeps reminding us, we should all be fine. (We're not going to be dangling in nets at dizzying heights, lost in a creepy earthen basement, or shredded by a pack of cute but destructive puppies...) All the same, we're glad to be in Mom's room rather than the basement these days.

On a happier note, after 2 long years without it, ArtPrize has returned to downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. Tons of art is scattered around a variety of indoor and outdoor venues for the next 3 weeks, and it's all open to the general public to enjoy free of charge. Mom's been down once already to see some of the art in person.

Here are some of our favorites so far:

Lakeshore Seasons
A gorgeous 4-paneled painting

Picture This
the 3D flowers and leaves are made of tiny beads on wire!

Electrified!
This sculpture incorporates lots of fun lights and moving pieces, like a frog that lights up and sticks out its "tongue," a paper blow-out.

This was hand-stitched! Mom can't remember what it was titled.

Solitude
we love the texture and color palette of this one

SeE tuRtLEs sWimmiNG
Over 70 of these "mixed media" turtles are swimming on the side of the Grand Rapids Children's Museum.  Each one has its own name!

They are arranged by color, though at the front with the reds, some rainbow and patriotic ones are included. =)

PO (Art)Box
How fun would it be to get to decorate one of these?

Grand Passage

Serene Beach

Magnificent Sunset

The above Michigan lakeshore scenes were arranged into a 3-sided display collectively titled Postcards from Home. The artist painted the scenes on polished brass, then used grinders and engraving hand tools to reveal some of the brass underneath. The artist, who was on site talking to visitors, is a veteran, and he explained that memories of these places helped him endure stressful and dangerous situations while deployed at war. If all that isn't powerful enough, he's also passing out postcards on which visitors can write encouraging messages to be sent to current military service people.

Wow, so much great art, so little time!

In honor of ArtPrize, here are some HI3 wilds we've recently lassoed that, while they would not win any awards for stats, performance metrics, or personalities, are still works of art.

Gotta love the impressive variety of HI3's wild equines! <3

Stripes and Spots Part 2

It seems like long time since our last post! Here it is September already, and we are enjoying some of the most pleasant weather of the year. My sisters, Felicity especially, do not appreciate anybody rushing fall's entrance, so I'll keep it down. But still, I can't help be excited for all that's ahead: fire pit gatherings, ArtPrize, apple cider, changing leaves, my birthday, Halloween...

My sisters are way more excited currently about recent events on HI3. As you've probably guessed, it has to do with amassing even more equines at an alarming rate.

Blue made his grand entrance on the 14th, and so I rather foolishly thought that between him, and crafting all sorts of dyes and tack thanks to the awesome dye guide link Gem sent, we'd be set for a while. But no.

In the game, our buddy Gem breeds cool horses, including jumbo-sized horses in fun colors and patterns. She sometimes has extra foals that don't make the cut in furthering her breeding programs, which go up for sale. My sisters are usually pretty good about not getting attached to any horses they may see for sale on HI3. (One small improvement from HI2.) They've admired Gem's adorable crops of foals frequently without incident. Not sure what changed this time, but they started checking in on a particular batch of her young for sale horses almost every time they'd go online: watching them grow and waiting to see if they'd be sold. When their favorite two turned four, and Gem and Pepsi were online at the same time, they just couldn't resist any longer and asked Gem about them. A few short minutes later, after awkwardly having to ask how to quick travel to the Mane Event to meet her avatar (you can tell how frequently we compete, ha ha) the two enormous brindle drafties were ours.

It was late on a weeknight for us when this whole thing went down, so we didn't have time to take screenshots of their profiles as we would've otherwise done, but here is the look back on them at exactly 4 years old.

The first, "Lena's foal," is technically a Grade Warm-blooded Horse. And yes, in frame he does look like a warmblood, albeit an exceptionally big one. =)

He's huge, alright - makes Pepsi look like a kid. =)

For such a big guy, he's so graceful, and that coloring... wow!

We tried to think of an appropriate name for him that started with L, since his mom's name is Lena, but nothing we came across seemed right. In the end we went a different direction and decided to call him Botticino, after a cool kind of marble he resembles.

The second, "Mae's foal," is a Grade Cold-blooded Horse. His build is definitely more draft-like, but he still maneuvers quite well for his size.

While Pepsi was still at the Mane Event with Gem, we stood "Mae's foal" with his grandpa Ham, one of Gem's first and most special horses. <3 We think it's adorable how much our new stallion resembles him!

We were tempted to name him "Hamlet" and Lena's foal "Horatio," but we couldn't quite pull the trigger on that. XD We also tried out "Culatello" for a while after a fancy Italian ham, but we thought it might cause too much snickering if anybody translated it into English. So we went for Prosciutto instead, even if it is a bit tricky to spell.

Well, I suppose if my sisters had to go rouge, at least it was for horses as cool as these. But this had better be a one-time thing, guys.

Of course, we didn't stop lassoing horses just because we'd now committed to adding 3 horses in August. The first wild to tempt us was this one, a curvy-eared pony found hanging out near our ranch:

His stats and personality were solid, but his build was decidedly on the small, delicate side. (Such tiny legs and hooves!)

I succeeded in talking my sisters out of keeping him. He was quite a cute pony, though - I don't think I'd have been able to convince them if he'd been bigger.

Just when I was thinking we might actually make it through August without adding any grade wilds to the herd, on the 30th, we found this one. *Sighs*

It's like the game went, "Oh, Pepsi, you really like brindle pintos, then? Okay, here you go!"

You're too kind, HI3. Like my sisters could ever resist this

She didn't really look like an Angel to us, so we have renamed her Jaunty, mostly because of her happy little tail. =)

That truly was the end of the tempting August horses. Good thing, because we have run out of mobia for purchasing infinitum amulets. Mobia prices in-game keep going up so much that those amulets are getting as hard to come by as we feared when we initially joined the game. I fear we will be relying on Mom to fund infinitum amulets going forward, which means the days of my sisters going hog wild with expanding the herd will (hopefully?) now be over. We'll see!
