Savanna Wanderings

I know we're late to the party. HI3 introduced zebras to the game back on May 4, but we didn't even venture into their turf, the savanna biomes, until last weekend.

We have not yet laid eyes on any albino or squiggle striped zebras (or albino squiggle striped zebras), though they do exist! The few we've seen being ridden around and in Gem's herd have all been the traditional type.

We weren't that enthusiastic about the zebras at first, because with their addition came some unwanted albeit realistic personality developments. All zebras and zebra hybrids buck off their riders with extreme frequency until they reach 5000 experience points. If that wasn't disappointing enough, all donkeys and donkey hybrids now display extreme stubbornness until they reach 5000 experience points. As in it's really hard to get them to go forward from a stop. Constantly. *Sighs.* The developments certainly make sense, but I feel for all the non-experienced donkeys and donkey hybrids on the game who were suddenly way less desirable. Poor Toby and Nightingale are out of commission for now until we get around to giving them intensive stat training.

As you probably already know, we are not big fans of being virtually bucked off, but curiosity eventually won out, and Pepsi headed out to various savanna biomes, deliberately seeking out zebras. It took a long time last Saturday, but eventually we found one near a village, not even trying to hide. It's interesting, because with our "normal" graphics setting, at least, you can't really see the stripes until you get close.

Above-average stat total but too small to ride. It figures, right?

Going just by her personality, she was not ornery for a zebra, but that did not stop her from bucking. And yes, you can be "bucked off" (or bucked out?) while in a cart. Pepsi will go sailing through the air and find herself standing an inconvenient distance away, and the harness and cart magically vanish from the equine.

This past Tuesday was Mom's (and consequently PepsiSummer's) birthday! HI3 knew!

Thank you, HI3!

We decided to have Pepsi ride around savanna as much as we could that day, not only because we wanted to see more zebras but because we enjoy the big, speedy savanna wilds.

We found many non-noteworthy wild horses. We'd nearly given up hope of finding any to so much as tempt us, when we found this big, black, Beatles beauty:

Her genetic stats are good...

... plus she's speedy and turns well for her size. We expected the skittishness, since that's typical of savanna wilds, but what a shame that she is just ornery enough to buck!

Here is the very next wild we caught:

Another big, marking-less beauty, this time in fancy "claybank apricot" dun.

Nice, once again an above-average genetic stat total.

It's almost like the game was saying, "Oh, Pepsi, you don't want an ornery horse for your birthday? Okay, then how about this one?

And then, like it really wanted to make sure we were happy, it gave us a zebra in short order.

This one had bigger, bolder stripes than our first and was also over 12 hands. Yay!

He was also very ornery, so we didn't consider keeping him, but it was entertaining to see Pepsi ride a zebra for the first time! (And get bucked off several times. Sorry, Pepsi!)

We sold a bunch of wilds (including the zebra, not big black or big apricot) and travelled back to the savanna. Because why not push our luck at this point?

We found another zebra!

Not just any zebra, but one with a genetic stat total over 1000! And he's just tall enough to be ridden.

Again, it's like the game was saying, "Oh, Pepsi, you don't want an exceptionally ornery zebra for your birthday? Okay, then how about this one?

Pepsi's quite big for him, but since it was Mom's birthday, and since his stat total is so high, I think he may be staying anyway. We really want to breed a zorse once we find the right mare...

We thought for sure that was it for the day, but the game gave us one more surprise before we logged off.

Wow, it's savanna horse #3 with a good genetic stat total! It's like the game added her as an afterthought: "Oh, Pepsi, here's one more. Just in case you really wanted spots for your birthday."

She's not as big and speedy as the other two, but she is a little braver... and not quite ornery enough to buck.

Thank you very much, HI3. You are so generous! We're going to have a really tough time deciding which of the horses to keep!

That's it for now on the virtual equine front, but feel free to read on if you're interested in Mom's non-virtual gifts.

Here was the birthday pic from her page-a-day calendar this year:

Kind of cute, right? I find it interesting that he has a blue eye on the dark patch of his face and a brown eye on the white. (It's often the other way around.)

Speaking of page-a-day birthday pics, we never posted about mine... Maybe I'll sneak it in a future post, but I'm too lazy to go take a picture of it now.

Anyway, Mom's family was as generous as HI3. Here are the gifts waiting to be opened:

And here they are unwrapped:

Lots of clothes this year! Also more of the little Audubon birds that make the real-life call of the bird they represent. (Except for the pileated woodpecker, who was sadly mute upon arrival.) My sisters and I have been having fun with those. The big black thing in the back is a sparkly lap desk for Mom's laptop, Milton. Mom is loving the padded cushion and wrist rest. And the little silver thing on the right is a necklace with a little Michigan-shaped pendant. (Because who doesn't want jewelry in the shape of their home state? XD)

The most sentimental gift: the white teddy. Mom happened to find him on eBay and noticed that he bore a striking resemblance to her brown teddy Hubert.

Hubert has been a bit more... well-loved than his twin (Cubert, maybe?) but it does not detract from his cuteness. <3

The teddy and the birds all immediately got moved to the safety of Mom's room, as they look way too much like dog toys to Nala. It's starting to look like a stuffed animal convention in there.

  1. Happy belated birthday! You had some lovely presents, I particularly like the horse and doll rider. Are they Breyer?

You also got some nice equines there, I like the Cobby looking pinto mare, she's cute.
The donkey update was harsh, donkeys and mules are way more rideable than zebras, and lumping them all together was somewhat short sighted in my opinion. What they should have done is maybe made donkeys halfway between zebras and horses in terms of personality and experience needed. As things stand, I probably wont ever ride Aderyn again, and I'm not going to bother with donkeys zebras or hybrids anymore.
Unless you are comping all the time it's really hard to get the experience to make them rideable, and I'm hopeless at comps, mainly because I haven't mastered how to jump, I either plough right into the obstacle or get stuck on top of it! Good job I'm an explorer, not a showjumper!

I've been spending some time in savanna/jungle/rainforest biomes lately as well. Found a small jungle isle that was quite nice, but it was right next to a really scenic area with an Aztec pyramid and volcanic area and rainbow eucalyptus beach nearby, so I expect somebody would come along and build a town there (I would). So the quest continues.

I caught a nice brindle mare in the savanna, she was hanging out with her elephant friend. I felt really bad about breaking them up, especially when the elephant threw a tantrum right after I caught her, lol.

Anyhow, hope you had a fantastic birthday, and hopefully I'll catch you ingame soon.

  2. Thank you, PukkaPixie! =) The horse and rider are actually Grand Champions. They are similar to Breyer classics in size, but the horses have brushable manes and tails. Sadly, the line was discontinued in the late 2000's. I have a large collection of them as well as some Breyers. Do you collect any model horses?

Aw, I'm glad you like the cobby pinto too! Not very elegant, but definitely cute. Also, apparently you are not the only one the markingless black wild horses like.

I think you have an excellent point: I'd assume zebras are much more challenging to work with in real life than donkeys. It also was unfortunate that donkeys were changed after they'd already been on the game for a while. Sorry about Aderyn. I don't blame you a bit for wanting to steer clear of anything zebra/donkey/hybrid! I still want one of each in my herd, just because I can, but that will be enough for me.

Oh my, you've gotten stuck on top of obstacles?! XD I didn't even know that was possible! I'm with you: I'd much rather explore than compete! Consequently, I have gobs of odd-looking, untrained grade horses, and I'm perfectly okay with that. ;)

Best of luck to you as your search continues! Yep, sounds like you were wise to pass over that jungle isle. Last thing you need is a repeat of what already happened.

Ha, ha, sounds like you made an elephant quite unhappy. What color brindle is your mare?

Hope to catch you in-game soon!

  3. Hi Pepsi, I have one breyer ideal the Oldenburg stallion, a few schleich models and a few random frankenhorses that I made out of paper mache!

As you correctly surmised, the reason we don't ride zebras is because 1. They are too small and 2. They are too wild. Although there is a showjumping zebra on YouTube somewhere. The donkeys got a raw deal, but the game Devs have decided that's how it's going to be. So I'm going to keep Aderyn and her dad, Dusty, but I'm going to trader the other donkey I caught because there's no point breeding another mule now.

Yes, you absolutely can get stuck on obstacles! Especially beavered logs and ranch fencing.
Maybe I need to train my horses or something? I can't be bothered though, because I like to take turns riding all of them, if I have to get over a fence I can generally do it better on foot.

I'm still exploring a huge volcanic/jungle area and have lost count of the jungle pyramids I've discovered. Now I want an island with one!
I caught another nice black horse the other night, he was hanging out on a beach near one of those Greek temple looking things. He's a minimal tobiano and I've called him Orpheus. It was odd that I caught him when I did, because earlier I was wondering who I was going to breed my 'black beauties' to.
I've already bred Xena to a buckskin waler, so there'll be a foal in a day or two, and I have a few European hotblood foals from a recent breeding splurge, although I'll have to trader a couple of them.

My brindle mare is Claybank yellow, she might be silver because she has a white mane and tail. She has one of those funny bobbly manes like the Beatles horse in this post.

    1. Hi PukkaPixie,

      I have so many questions!
      1. What's the story behind your Breyer, Ideal the Oldenburg? (He's a very handsome horse, but why him specifically?)
      2. How did you stop at just one Breyer?
      3. What size are these paper mache frankenhorses?
      4. What inspired you to create these horses?
      5. Are they paper mache-colored, or did you paint them?

I think I found the zebra you were referring to on YouTube, Zack the zebra. XD Very cool! At any rate, I'm glad you are still keeping Aderyn and her dad.

I like to take turns riding all of my horses too - I'll just switch to one of my best jumpers, like Topi or Driftwood, if I have to get over a high fence. :) Training does help some as well, but yeah, it isn't feasible to train everybody. I'm curious how you are able to get over fences on foot? I've never even thought to try that.

Ooh, an island with a jungle pyramid would be cool! I hope you find one! I'm partial to the big pandas myself.

Time for me to visit your current ranch again to see your new additions, I think! They all sound lovely, but I'm most eager to see that brindle. ("Funny bobbly manes" is a great description of that mane type, by the way.) Hopefully I make it out there before you trader the foals...

  4. Ooh so many questions...

Ideal is my only breyer because I got him from a charity shop for 3 pounds. The frankenhorses are in a range of sizes from schleich size up to breyer size. Some are air dry clay on a wire armature, some are paper mache over various armatures, toilet roll tubes, aluminium foil, or wire. They all get a thin topcoat of airdry clay or drywall filler and then they are painted with acrylic paint and a topcoat of acrylic varnish. I also make little fairy houses and other animals.
I have a Chihuahua, some sheep, a llama and an elephant. I have lots of unfinished projects lying around at the moment, including a dragon head and a baby orangutan face that are meant to be wall art.
My sculpting/ painting skills aren't wonderful, it's just a hobby. It takes me forever to finish anything, and I keep starting new things. :)

Glad you found Zack the zebra, I looked him up again too. I'd forgotten how tiny he is.

I'm not sure how I get over the fences, I run full pelt towards them and hit the spacebar. I must have a look in zoomed out view.
I do exactly the same thing on horseback, but mostly end up stuck on top of the fence. I did manage to jump over some fallen mushrooms last night, so that's a good start. It might just be a timing thing on my part.

Xena's foal is due today, but if you can wait until Saturday night for a visit, there will be some teeny tiny newborns in the barn.
It's annoying because I still havent found a permanent home and I need to build some new barns. I might just throw up some gilligans at the old ranch.

    1. Wow, what a find! At that price, I'd have snatched him up too! I've never had that sort of luck in second-hand shops or yard sales around here. Hubert the brown teddy came from one a few years back, though. <3

I am so impressed that you both sculpt and paint your creations! Must take quite a bit of practice and patience. Wish I could see photos. Back in middle school I sculpted and painted a clay zebra for an art project. I still have it (and it somehow got me an A), but it did not turn out as I had hoped at all. XD I've stuck with 2D drawings and painting existing model horses since.

Interesting! Perhaps it is a timing thing with the jumping? When I don't get it right, the horse and I just end up coming to an abrupt halt against the object, though. Not nearly so entertaining.

I did visit your ranch again near the last time I commented. Your brindle, Kara, is as lovely as I expected. She's the first brindle I've seen with her coloring on the game. I think Orpheus was an incredibly lucky find as well! I love his sprinter build and markings! Two of my other favorites as I was clicking through were Blues Traveler and Destiny - I guess I love dun pintos. =) I plan to stop by again later today to see Xena's foal and the newborns. <3 Thanks for the heads up!

  5. You've named some of my favourite horses there! Blues Traveler was such a cool name, I didn't see any point in changing it. Xena's foal Xerxes is maturing nicely now, and it was a nice surprise to find some of the foals had the silver gene, my stallion Texas is red based, and obviously hiding a copy or two!
I find it interesting that although the foals either generally look like either parent or a mix of both, their stats metrics and personality appear to be randomly generated. There doesn't seem to be any logic in what they inherit.
Did you notice my new lucky find? Marangatu the Brazilian sport horse? I found him on a mail run in the rainforest near Silvervale.
I named him after a wise king from native Brazilan folklore.

    1. Hi PukkaPixie,

I agree, sometimes a wild's randomly-generated name just fits, and "Blues Traveler" is an especially cool one. I last saw Xerxes when he was only 0.5 years and also some super cute teensy foals. (Love Xerxes's snip, by the way!) Now I want to go back and see how they all have grown! (Also, I think it is so fun that we have a "view horse at 0 years" button so that you can always look back. XD One of my favorite game features.)

How cool that Texas was hiding silver! So true, it wouldn't show up when he didn't have any black to dilute! Interesting that you've noticed so much randomness in stats and personality with your foals! I've only bred one foal so far, so I can't really weigh in there, but I am curious to learn more now.

Nope, I have not seen Marangatu yet! Congratulations! Another reason to pay your current ranch another visit! <3 I love his name!

      Enjoy your weekend!

    1. It does! XD I've never eaten that, but it looks delicious!

I visited your ranch last weekend! Marangatu is indeed a super lucky lucky find! He's so handsome - reminds me of Chuckles but has his own distinct look. Hopefully he'll be able to get you over most obstacles you come across.

Your foals had already grown so much since I last saw them! "Finnigan's foal" and "Tilly's foal" are probably my favorites at this stage, but they're all adorable. =)

Also, Socks is quite something! I've never seen a wild built like her before. =) Do you remember which biome you found her in?
